My name is Ashley Snyman. I’m 23 and graduated in 2019. I studied Patisserie and ran my own at home bakery from 2021.
I am from Namibia and had struggled in mainstream schooling from a young age. In 2016, my mom and I decided that I would immigrate to SA and continue my schooling here. After looking for a school that would “fit the bill”, we found nothing. A friend told me about this fantastic home-school styled tutor center where learners work at their own pace. Once I heard the name, I had this gut feeling that this is where I need to go. It changed my life.
On my first day at MPower, I was so shy and nervous. I think Marlene could tell and honestly made me feel so welcome. Marlene helped me set up my computer and showed me everything I needed to know and off I went. I started out with Brainline, for about 2 years I believe. I was really struggling with grade 9 though, especially in accounting. No matter what or how long I took to try and get it into my brain, Marlene would not give up. Then GED came around. After seeing what it was about, I decided that it would be my best bet on finishing school. 2 Years later, I graduated with good marks and went on to study!
My fondest memories or what I take away from my experience at MPower, are the lifelong friends I made. Marlene always made sure there was a balance between our schoolwork and our down time, or even time for us to work on creative things or spend time to really have a break.
My advice for students would be to enjoy the journey and not wish it away. Do not rush it because that is when you make mistakes. Do not ever think you won’t make it. My mom and I thought I would never finish school and look at me now.
For the parents, just believe in your kids. Support them. Love them. Believe me, they will make it. Just be patient. Give them the time and watch them grow.
I would also just like to thank Marlene for completely changing my life. For being there for me, for loving me and supporting me no matter what.
